Volunteer - Karen
My name is Karen, and I earned the gift of a sabbatical from my employer for completing my Master’s Degree in 2007. What to do with this gift of time? I had decided to combine my love of travel with a volunteer experience. I did a lot of research, and after a conversation with a co-worker who had been to New Zealand, decided to search for an opportunity in that part of the world.

As a Catholic, I thought a faith-based service opportunity would also provide me an opportunity for prayer and contemplation. What a great thing the Internet is! By typing in some key words, I was led to the Sisters of Compassion.

The first thing I noticed was the quote from Mother Aubert on the home page – “If we have more things to do than we can find time for, let us consider the time at our disposal, and let us employ it without losing a minute, beginning by the most important things, and not troubling about those which we cannot perform." I was considering the time at my disposal – it seemed as if there were forces at work leading me to Island Bay.

Then I saw the tab for volunteers, and sent a quick e-mail to Sr. Margaret Anne and before I knew it, we had agreed to the time for my visit. From the moment I arrived at the airport and met Sr. Margaret Anne, I felt welcomed and entirely at home. I was to stay at Aubert House and work at the Soup Kitchen most of the week, and help in the office.

Living with the Sisters was a wonderful experience for me. The chapel and grounds are so peaceful, and provide many opportunities for prayer and reflection. There is such a feeling of family and acceptance, and I learned something special from each of the sisters in the house – and I loved playing challenging Scrabble games in the evenings with Sr. Cabrini and Sr. Basil.

Working in the soup kitchen was exhausting at first, but very rewarding. I was amazed at the efficiency with which the staff accomplishes the task of feeding so many in such a short time. The chefs are amazing – making wonderful meals from the food at hand. Desmond and the staff are very patient with newcomers, and it didn’t take me long to feel that I knew my way around – although Sr. Ema and Sr. Rachel are ever-watchful! Now that I’m back home, I find I really miss the daily Mass with Father Rob.

Back in Island Bay, I used my computer skills to help with some tasks in the office. During this time, I learned a lot about Mother Aubert, and the amazing organization she founded. I am anxious to follow her path to sainthood, and am humbled by the amazing energy and lasting impact this small woman had on an entire nation.

Faith and prayer were a part of every day. I became accustomed to saying the Rosary each day, and am trying to maintain the practice at home. I love music, and was so taken with the lovely choir. I learned many new songs, and heard a few familiar ones.

During my time in Wellington, I was able to visit Upper Hutt on several occasions, and was lucky enough to be in Wellington during the Arts festival and attend a concert, and also to do a little exploring. New Zealand is truly an amazing place, and I savored every moment of my experience. I pray that I will have the opportunity to return, and am so grateful for the many kindnesses and blessings I received from those I met during my journey.

May God bless you all –
Until we meet again

Karen
