Bequest in Will

"It is better to give than to Receive" - My Mum

There is not much we can do in life that will benefit others and do good after we die.  One means of doing so, is to make a bequest or two to our favourite charity.

A bequest is a means of leaving something to someone else through your Will.   It is easy to make a bequest whether it involves leaving a sum of money or some property.  It is simply a case of stipulating in your Will what you want to happen to such property after you die.

What happens is when you die, the trustees of your estate that you have named in your Will collect, and where appropriate, cash up the assets.  The trustees pay off the debts.  The legacies to your favourite charity are then paid before the bulk of your estate is distributed to family members.  If you have few close family members, and a close attachment to a charity, you can even leave a share of the residue of your estate to your favourite charity.

Examples:

“I give, devise and bequeath the sum of $x to the Home of Compassion, Wellington for general purposes.”

If you wish you can stipulate a particular entity or specific purpose.
“I give, devise and bequeath the sum of $x to the Home of Compassion Soup Kitchen in Tory Street, Wellington to assist in renovations.”

You may wish to leave a share of your estate to charity.
“I give a one xth share (1/xth) of my residue of my estate to the Home of Compassion, Wellington.”

When next revising your Will, consider making a bequest and ensure that the good you have done in life continues in some small way after you die.
