ADD / ADHD ClinicIt is estimated that between 3% and 6% of male children in New Zealand have ADD/ADHD (Attention deficit disorder). With the help of the Sisters of Compassion, the ADD New Zealand Trust was set up at the Home of Compassion in Island Bay in July 2003, to help with the assessment of ADD and to provide a support centre for families whose children are affected. There was an identified need for early medical diagnosis for children who have inherited neurological learning disorders (ADD/ADHD, aspergers, autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia), with education and support for families, young people and adults who live with these disorders. Examination by a skilled paediatrician is vital, to exclude issues, producing symptoms that can resemble neurological disorders. Whatever the reason for the visit, many families will require information and support, either to manage the life long issues associated with neurological disorders, so that the child reaches his/her educational, social and employment potential, or where management changes may reassure the anxious child, the highly intelligent child or the child with other needs. The Centre offers ongoing information and support following the initial visit, because individual needs will change. The care of the child with a neurological disorder is a family and parenting issue, as well as an educational, social and ultimately an employment issue. Ongoing information and support is also important for educational and health professionals. Most referrals are made by parents, but general practitioners, nurses and teachers have also made referrals. Up to September 2004, new patients totalled 119 with the number of repeat visits totalling 205. The work is increasing rapidly and it is envisaged that another paediatrician will need to be employed. The Sisters of Compassion enabled the ADD NZ Trust to establish the ADD Assessment and Family Support Centre at the Home of Compassion at Island Bay. The centre is grateful for the dedication of Dr. Leo Buchanan, the voluntary support of the PA, the Coordinator and the Office Administrator who have all enabled the Centre to provide an efficient, caring, supportive and professional service to patients and families.
