The Sisters of Compassion purchased the Upper Hutt City Council’s pensioner units in June 2000.  The Sisters have had a strong presence in Upper Hutt for almost 70 years through St Joseph’s Home of Compassion at Heretaunga. The purchase of the pensioner housing units has given the Sisters an excellent opportunity to provide a greater level of outreach services to the community where older persons are already living. It has enabled the Sisters to work constructively within the Government’s policy of keeping people in the community.

Compassion Housing is a Sisters of Compassion charitable company, which respects the dignity of older persons through:

offering quality housing that is affordable and comfortable

respecting their right to independence

offering friendship, encouragement and assisting them to live an active life

offering advocacy for access to healthcare, social and government assistance

encouraging those with ill health to seek and obtain appropriate care

A nurse is employed for eight hours per week to visit and provide advocacy for anyone who is sick and advise them or their families of the assistance available through the Hospital or Work and Income and related services.  The Sisters from St Joseph’s Home of Compassion visit those who enjoy a friendly visit from time to time.

Compassion Housing has also purchased two mobility scooters to enable a couple of residents with special disabilities to continue living with independence.

Garry Salmons, Compassion Housing Services Manager, is located in Upper Hutt.  He is employed to look after Tenants and the care and maintenance of the buildings.  We have always had a waiting list.

His role is to:

assess all applications for rental housing and approve tenancies within Board policies;

ensure residents are able to experience a quality of life that enables them to live their lives with personal respect, safety and dignity;

arrange for regular assessment of residents and match their needs with services and entitlements from the community;

manage relationships with community and government agencies supporting older persons within the community; and

manage relationships with property management company, grounds maintenance and other contractors in maintaining tenancy levels and quality of housing stock.

For all enquiries, please contact Garry Salmons (see above).
