Dawn on the 1st October 2003 saw the unveiling of a carving dedicated to the work of Suzanne Aubert with the Maori at the Compassion Centre in Tory Street. Known to her Maori friends as Meri Hohepa, she said writing for her Sisters in training in our Directory in 1917.

There was a large gathering at St Joseph's Rest Home and Hospital at Heretaunga on 29 June for the blessing and opening of a new rest home wing comprising twelve rooms and a lounge dining room area.

I will always be able to say that I began my teaching career in a centre where Suzanne Aubert lay close by. In fact she is buried next to the garden where the infants and toddlers play. Whilst I water the plants at the top of the garden with the children, I often look over at her headstone and am reminded of the history of the Aubert Childcare Centre. What a privilege it is for me to have one of this country's greatest pioneers of early childhood education literally buried in 'my' back yard.

There is excitement and joy in the air at Jerusalem as we are embarking on the process of conserving our Church and "Old Convent". Repairs and upgrading needs have been assessed so the necessary work can begin.

On the 30th May I accompanied Jessie Munro to France. Jessie had been awarded a government Teacher Fellowship administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand, to research early French Catholic history in northern New Zealand during the time of Bishop Pompallier. Part of this research entailed a study of the early Marist Brothers who operated the first printing press and built the only pisé building in the country. In addition Jessie aimed to do further research on Suzanne Aubert.

My story began in March 2002 when I was introduced to my MASK for the first time. I had just been told that I had a very loud snore and stopped breathing many times each hour while I slept. I was stunned.

The Home of Compassion closed its doors for the final time yesterday. While the future of the building is still unknown, for 86 years it wore a coat of many colours. Stu Piddington takes a look at its history and talks to two people who have had a close association with it.
