To organic gardener Sister Loyola Galvin, compost is a meditation about ongoing life. As well as feeding a community of twenty sisters, the gardens at Wellington’s Home of Compassion provide sustenance of a spiritual kind, she says.

Wellington Street Day was a resounding success. As in past years, the appeal was again strongly supported by Wellingtonians, who were in a very generous mood in their support of the Sisters.

Whilst in Jerusalem in August, members of the Leadership Team took the opportunity to meet with Keith Murray, project manager for the Conservation project of the Convent and Church at Jerusalem and to catch-up “first-hand” on progress with the project.

On 13 August the Leadership Team and support staff travelled to Jerusalem and were formally welcomed on to the local Marae by representatives of the Marae Komiti. The Sisters and Komiti members spent some time talking about the future involvement of Sisters at Jerusalem and the dreams and wishes of the Komiti for the future of Jerusalem.

In anticipation of the canonisation and the continued interest of the New Zealand Public in everything relating to Suzanne Aubert, we made a decision to upgrade our archives.

So far this year we have acquired 560 new donors following our donor acquisition flyers in the WelCom and Marist Messenger publications in August, which is a significant way towards the goal of 1,000 new donors set by the Leadership Team at the beginning of the year. Since starting our donor programme in July 2002, about 4,500 people have become donors in support of the works of the Sisters.

Vascular surgeon Bill Shirer and clinical nurse wound specialist Chris Wyness are continuing to help a significant number of people in the Wellington area who have leg ulcers that are not healing with traditional treatment methods.

Last year the sisters worked with Sister Patricia Hannan OP gathering information on the life of Suzanne Aubert. A week long inquiry was held at the Home of Compassion during which, some people whose families had a special connection with Suzanne Aubert during her lifetime, were interviewed and also others whose work has meant that they had useful knowledge of her.

2005 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Rotary International by Paul Harris. This significant service club which began in the United States, soon moved to many countries around the globe and twenty years later the first Rotary club in New Zealand was established in Central Wellington.

As one of the outcomes of our General Chapter 2005 I now find myself at Island Bay, Wellington after an absence of some 26 years! As the newest addition to the Leadership Team my life at present is shot through with creative chaos and challenge - yet, full of the promise of growth, learning and adventure!

Sr Ema Konokono joined the Compassion Centre in September of 2005. Immediately prior to that she accompanied a group of 95 New Zealand young people to the World Youth Day with Pope Benedict in Cologne. Here is her account of that trip.

This year the Governor General offered us the opportunity to hold a dinner at Government House. The Sisters chose to use this as another way of saying thank you to the supporters of their work in Wellington.

In 1998 the Tongan Community asked Sister Sia to help them with their religious programs, including giving retreats. Sister was officially appointed by Cardinal Thomas Williams to this ministry in 2000. Recently Sister Sia was appointed by the Sisters of Compassion to work in Wairoa and to assist her in her ministry there she completed a Pastoral Ministry Program.

Excited by Sue Cosgrove's vision of Jerusalem as a place of pilgrimage, peace and retreat, I traveled up from Wellington to explore ways I could help raise awareness and funds. I booked when she could have time to talk. However life at Jerusalem has a way of spontaneously unfolding.

Since January 2000 I have been part of the team of sisters, lay staff and volunteers at the Suzanne Aubert Compassion Centre. As well as duties in the kitchen and dining room for breakfast and dinner, I co-ordinate our Outreach Visiting Programme to elderly and isolated people in the city. This has involved training several volunteers for the programme. I regularly visit agencies and drop in centres where I meet guests from the Centre.

When I came back to Suva I was looking at working with remedial classes. I was interested in schools that worked with children who had dropped out of classes. I was in the process of meeting up with the head teacher of one such school when I met up with a teacher who had been working on the Religious Education material at the Catholic Education Centre. This teacher had a teaching job to go to and she encouraged me to take on the work at the Catholic Education Office, as she had a hunch that I would see the process through.

In 1883, Bishop Redwood invited the Sisters of St Joseph to assist Father Soulas SM in re-establishing the Maori mission on the Whanganui River. The original mission, started by Fr Lampila SM, had been devastated by the Hau Hau Wars in 1864. Sisters Teresa and Aloysius were appointed to teach school on the Mission and Suzanne Aubert accepted the invitation to assist them.

On 20 January 2005, over 340 women and men religious will gather at St. Catherine's college, Wellington to celebrate the first ever National Conference for Religious of Aotearoa New Zealand. Included in this number are Religious from Australia, East Timor and the Islands of Fiji and Tonga.
