Biography

The Story of Suzanne Aubert written Jessie Munro

The biography of Suzanne Aubert, the small French nun who strode the streets and roads of New Zealand on behalf of the country’s poor and neglected, draws on wide-ranging research and reading, which includes material from the archives of the congregation she founded—the Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion. It is a rich story spanning many landscapes, several causes and a multitude of characters.

"This is a superb book, scrupulously researched from sources in English, Latin, French and Italian. It is stylishly written, generously illustrated and rewarding to read… Most importantly, it speaks to our times."

- Michael King, New Zealand Listener.

In 1997 Jessie Munro, a first time author, won the Montana New Zealand Book of the Year Award with her biography of Suzanne Aubert.

The book was commissioned by the Sisters of Compassion, and published with the assistance of the Historical Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs.

‘The Story of Suzanne Aubert’ was first published in 1996 by the Auckland University Press. Copies are available at libraries, reputable book stores and the Sisters of Compassion Archives.
