Sr Hulita Hefa
Cape Town, South Africa
In 2000 Sister Hulita went to live with the Little Sisters of the Assumption to work with some of the poorest people. During her time in South Africa Sister Hulita worked in 4 areas and they were defined by the people as the two coloured areas and the two black areas. She worked with a local woman called Magdalene and together they visited the sick and the aged. They were able to help the people both with their physical and spiritual needs. In one of the areas a group of people came together for handwork and Sister Hulita would help them with their crafts so that they could sell their products to get an income for food.
Throughout the areas Sister Hulita assisted people with homecare that was organised in the different areas by three different groups; YMCA, the Warmth Project (War Against Malnutrition, Tuberculosis and Hunger) and CWD (Catholic Welfare Development). Through the CWD Sister Hulita assisted a group who came to a clinic for health education. Many of the mothers and children who came to the clinic suffered from AIDS or HIV. At the clinic Sister Hulita gave out milk and food coupons. The people used the coupons at one of the 39 Warmth kitchens where meals were given out. Sister Hulita returned to Tonga in June 2004.
