For 124 years the Compassion Soup Kitchen has been a place of dignity, welcome and practical care. Founded by Meri Hōhepa Suzanne Aubert in 1901 near the Basin Reserve, it has moved with the city but stayed firmly rooted in the Mount Cook community she first served.

From early donations of leftover produce to the ongoing generosity of orchards, schools, churches, businesses and volunteers, more than 15,000 people have played a part in offering meals and friendship. Even during the challenges of the 2020 lockdown, the Kitchen remained a steady expression of compassion for those in need.
